given the circumstance, why are these guards failing after not even one day? Especially those of a sufficient spiritual power. 95% of all cultivation gimmicks follow the premise of being able to stave off food, drink, and sleep for several days, even longer. Thats where the "monk in the cave" isolation rumors come from.
despite this, how could they not know something as simple as a guard rotation system? even the most devout and disciplined person needs to sleep eventually. Even hunters and gatherers know you cant have one man watching the village day and night. he will get tired, or distracted.
